Product Introduction

Magnolia oil, known as Magnolia Oil in English, is an essential oil extracted from the flowers of the magnolia tree, also known as Michelia or White Champaca. The oil is a light yellow to yellow-brown liquid with a rich, fresh magnolia fragrance. Its main components include myrcene, limonene, citral, caryophyllene, germacrene D, linalool, α-terpineol, nerolidol, eugenol, methyl butyrate, ethyl isovalerate, methyl eugenol, iso-methyl eugenol, trans-nerolidol, 1,8-cineole, decanoic acid, oleic acid, vitamin A, and various alkaloids.

Production Process of Michelia Oil

Michelia oil is extracted using the distillation method. Fresh Michelia flowers are collected and placed in a distiller. Water is then added, and the system is heated to around 90°C. As the temperature rises, the essential oil from the flowers is released and carried by steam into the condenser.

In the condenser, the steam cools down, and the oil separates from the water due to its lighter density. The oil naturally floats on top, forming a layer that can be collected as pure Michelia oil.

The extracted oil may still contain impurities and moisture, which need to be removed through filtration and purification. A professional filter or gauze can be used to remove any remaining impurities, and antioxidants or preservatives can be added to ensure the quality and shelf life of the oil.

Botanical Source - Michelia (White Champaca)

Michelia (Michelia × alba), also known as White Champaca, belongs to the Magnolia family and is an evergreen tree commonly found in Chinese gardens. The tree can grow up to 17 meters tall with a broad, umbrella-shaped crown. The bark is gray, and the branches are widely spread. The tree's flowers are white, with a strong, pleasant fragrance. Flowering occurs from April to October, with peak blooming in summer.

Michelia is native to Java, Indonesia, and is widely cultivated across Southeast Asia. In China, it is primarily grown in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan provinces. It is also potted in the Yangtze River basin for winter growth in greenhouses. Michelia thrives in environments with abundant light, good ventilation, and warm, moist conditions.

Due to its long flowering period and lush green leaves, Michelia is a popular garden and street tree. Its fragrant flowers are used to extract essential oils or to scent tea. Additionally, the leaves can produce essential oils, known as "Michelia Leaf Oil," used in perfumery, and its bark has medicinal uses, including treating constipation. Michelia is also recognized as one of the "Six Flowers" in Buddhist temples and is the city flower of cities like Jinjiang and Foshan.
