Product Overview
Rhododendron Oil is a volatile oil extracted by steam distillation from the leaves of the Rhododendron dauricum L., a species in the Ericaceae family. It is found in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, and other regions. The product is a clear liquid ranging from pale yellow-green to yellow-brown; it has a strong, stimulating aroma with a cool and spicy taste. When cooled below -10°C, it crystallizes. The oil is highly soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, chloroform, or ether, but only slightly soluble in water.
Production Process
Rhododendron Oil is refined using steam distillation. Fresh rhododendron flowers are placed in a distiller with a certain amount of water. The system is then heated to about 90°C and maintained at this temperature for a period. As the temperature rises, the essential oil from the rhododendron flowers is released and carried away with the steam into the collector. After the steam cools, the oil, being heavier than water, naturally rises and forms a layer that can be collected to obtain pure rhododendron oil. Any remaining impurities and moisture should be filtered out before use, and antioxidants and preservatives can be added to ensure quality and shelf life.

Plant Source - Rhododendron
Rhododendron (Rhododendron simsii Planch.) is a deciduous shrub in the Ericaceae family, growing 2-5 meters tall with many slender branches. The leaves are leathery, usually clustered at the branch tips, oval, elliptical, or obovate, with a short, gradually pointed tip. The leaf margins are slightly rolled and serrated, dark green on top and light white on the underside. The flowers are funnel-shaped or obovate, usually 2-6 clusters at the branch tops, in rose, bright red, or dark red colors, blooming in April-May, with fruiting from June-August.
Rhododendrons are widely distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America, with major production in East Asia and Southeast Asia. In China, they are concentrated in the Southwest and South China regions and are typical of acidic soil indicators. Rhododendrons prefer acidic, fertile soil, are shade-tolerant, and thrive in cool, moist mountain air.
Rhododendrons are one of China’s three major wild flowers and one of the world's four major alpine flowers, playing an important role in forest vegetation. They have extensive medicinal value, as recorded in traditional Chinese medicine texts, and are used to treat injuries, rheumatic joint pain, and more. The vibrant red flowers also have high ornamental value and can detect toxic gases like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen monoxide, showing patterns or leaf edge wilting. Rhododendrons symbolize a passionate, beautiful life and national prosperity and happiness, and have been featured in classical poetry by figures such as Li Bai.
